The
creation of Google Glass has definitely shown the evolution of technology. With a simple voice command, this wearable
smart-device may revolutionize our lifestyle.
It has various features such as taking photos and recording/live sharing
videos, sending messages & making calls, translating languages, showing
maps, answering your questions and so on. Google Glass is created by Google-founder
Sergey Brin as part of the "Project Glass". The research and development for the said project
began testing in the year 2012.
This new technology has its pros and cons. It has numerous advantages that may change
the way we live our lives. It provides
easy use and access to information. For
me, the most significant benefit of Glass is that it enables the handicapped to
use the power of their voice in order to perform tasks they couldn’t do before. With the possibility of voice activated
commands, the hands-free form factor allows those with disabilities to easily stay
connected. This breakthrough can change
the lives of these people for the better. It provides greater possibilities for
communication, monitoring, command, control, and documentation. Besides these,
it promotes the idea of education transformation through online courses which
can be accessed in our field of vision anytime and anywhere. It may also
revolutionize the way we work by increasing efficiency through having work done
on a virtual screen anywhere, and writing by voice command
But
with the wrong motives for its use, Google Glass may become an instrument of
abuse in a sense that it may invade privacy.
The aspect of security comes in
because Glass may be used for recording and posting without permission. It may also be a safety hazard in a sense
that it interferes with our field on vision which may become a major source of
distraction when it comes to encountering our environment and may cause
accidents. Lastly, it promotes the idea of the union of technology and
humans. Let us remember that essence of
being a human individual; of doing activities using our own bodies without
relying on the power of technology. Our
actions must control our use of technology and not vice-versa.
Overall,
I believe that Google Glass technology is beneficial to our civilization. With further studies on how to overcome the
security problem, it will definitely have an impact in the shaping of our
future society.
